As with most professional careers, the field of immigration law has requirements and prerequisites potential lawyers must meet before they’re allowed to practice law.

A good education, internships and proper licensing should be sought after by those interested in entering the immigration law career field.

It is also worth mentioning that although there are no undergraduate programs for lawyers, potential law candidates—particularly those interested in immigration law—are advised to take classes involving various social studies and humanities.

Education

The education process for an immigration lawyer can be a long journey that starts with an undergraduate degree. Upon obtaining an undergraduate degree, a prospective immigration lawyer is eligible to take the LSAT—the Law School Admission Test—which allows potential law students to apply for law school.

Once finished with law school, the student will obtain a juris doctor degree, which allows for the ability to take the State’s bar exam. Passing the exam is necessary to be a certified lawyer.

Strong research and writing ability is highly recommended for immigration lawyers, as each individual case requires a great deal of research into the individual client’s background.

Some immigration law students choose to pursue a criminal justice degree to fulfill their undergraduate studies, as courses pertaining to law enforcement will aid in future lawyerly duties. As our country grows and immigration laws change, so does the job market for immigration lawyers. Becoming an immigration lawyer can be an intensive and sometimes difficult job. You can take some preparatory steps to become an immigration lawyer in the most efficient and sensible manner possible.

1. Research what law school you want to attend after completing your undergraduate degree. Apply to schools that have a solid reputation for teaching the latest and most comprehensive study on immigration law to help you become an immigration lawyer.

2. Get accepted into a law program that keeps up on the latest and most up to date immigration laws in the world. Begin the program diligently and finish in a reasonable amount of time.

3. Locate an internship in an immigration law firm or immigration agency in your area while still in law school if possible. Join the law club and stay current in the most current immigration and naturalization laws.

4. Complete law school with high honors if possible. Boast a concentration and knowledge of immigration law practices in your curriculum vitae. Begin searching for job opportunities with firms or organizations that are active in the immigration legal community.

5. Locate a position in a national agency that deals with immigration cases to get a wide array of experience in the immigration law world. Also, join the American Immigration Lawyer Association.

6. Take any case which represents your personal convictions about the immigration laws, since it will aid in your zeal about representing the cause. Stay updated on all immigration news and laws. Become active in political committees that best represent your personal convictions.
